Breaking Wedding Traditions
It's 2023, and weddings are unconventional, non-traditional and unique. We live in a different age to our parents and their traditional weddings. Many people no longer want a church wedding followed by a hall and a top table. They want a warehouse, with a cocktail bar and a food truck outside. They want to take their wedding pictures in front of a colourful mural!
A place where all their friends can celebrate their love.
The Founder of the un-wedding said an un-wedding is, ‘A marriage ceremony and awesome celebration that cares less about following outdated traditions and more about reflecting who the couple really are.’
So, what can you do to throw the best non-traditional wedding this year? Let us have a look!
Guest books for non-traditional weddings
Let's ditch the lined guest book of copious congratulations shall we. How about you get your wedding guests to create something you can cherish forever!
● An instant camera for guests to take a picture and write a small note under it
● A wedding capsule. Like a wedding booked but it’ll be written out on one item your display in your home. Think of something you and your partner have in common - do you both surf? Well then why not get your guests to sign a surfboard!
● A fingerprint picture such as a tree or balloons is a lovely way for everyone to create you a unique piece of art.
There are so many creative things you can do that aren’t a closed book you look at occasionally.
Ditch the first dance
Now for me the idea of being in the spotlight, and dancing in that spotlight! Well, that fills me with so much fear and anxiety. You don’t have to scrap it entirely. You could still have your first dance but share it with everyone. A song dedicated to you both but you all dance together. Or maybe not the whole wedding but your bridal party! Dance with a small group that will fill you with confidence. Make this terrifying tradition a moment to remember.
To cake or not to cake
The one thing I love seeing at weddings is a cake made of cheese. Tiered cake of different cheeses, you eat it with your evening buffet with crackers and bread! Like this one we had at a wedding last year supplied by Arch House Deli.
But, some people have doughnuts, a stack of brownies or profiteroles. You could even have a cupcake for you and your partner to cut!
Why spend 100s-1000s of pounds on a cake most people don’t even eat? Spend that money on something you’ll actually get to enjoy!
